Herbert Rehbein

Hi,

I think this forum needs some heating up. There hasn't been much happening on the English and German parts for some time!

I happened to play the Taragon Herbert Rehbein issue tonight, and was (as always) amazed at how beautifully everything has been arranged. Some would say that it is all very "super-sweet", but it has always been quite clear that Bert's right-hand buddy was an incurable romantic. [This can be witnessed also on the Rehbein arrangements on the Johnny Mathis Kaempfert LP recorded at Rahlstedt Studio, Hamburg in about 1970 but released as a double issue (the other featuring music by Bacharach) on CBS].

The original American Decca Rehbein LPs from 1964, 1967 and 1969 were called "Music to Soothe that Tiger", "Love after Midnight", and "And so to Bed", respectively.

My question: what were the original European titles of the same LPs? I know that one was called "Bert Kaempfert Presents... Love" in the Polydor "Stereo Musicale" series, but I don't even know which one that was (although I suspect that it was the last one from 1969).

Thank you to Taragon for this triple-LP release on 2 CDs. I love it, especially the second CD. Rehbein's clever arrangement of "Malaysian Melody" with a million pizzicato strings and an odd beat is just totally amazing!

Herbert Rehbein - 2

Dear Alistair,

BERT KAEMPFERT PRESENTS LOVE (Polydor 237644) is MUSIC TO SOOTHE THAT TIGER on Decca, LOVE AFTER MIDNIGHT (Polydor 184078) is also LOVE AFTER MIDNIGHT on Decca, - and the American Decca-album ....AND SO TO BED was never released in Europe, although Marc Boettcher writes in his book THE BERT KAEMPFERT STORY about a German-releasing under the title THE LOVE MUSIC OF BERT KAEMPFERT, but i can't find any Polydor-catalogue-number anywhere. - And Herbert made/recorded a beautiful fourth album for Philips: BEAUTIFUL MORNING (6345062) which was completed and released in spring of 1980 after his early death in July 1979. - Please note that there are a lot of mistakes in the liner-notes and notices of the Taragon-2CD-set of Herbert Rehbein; - for example the track "Ebb Tide" belongs to LOVE AFTER MIDNIGHT ( not to ....AND SO TO BED ) and the LP-numbers are those from the mono-LPs. Also some life-dates from Herbert go wrong in the text. - Kindest regards from Vienna, please contact me under kawede55@yahoo.de if you want to get booklets and bottoms for separated CDs from Herbert.

Dear Karl-Walter,

Many thanks for that very comprehensive and informative answer. I had heard once about a Philips issue, but had then forgotten about it because I have never seen it!

I wonder why it was released on Philips and not on Polydor? Was it made in the "Polydor" studio (Rahlstedt)? Did BK have anything to do with it, and did it have mainly Kaempfert-Rehbein "songs" on it? Or was this an independent venture by Herbert Rehbein?

I guess there was never any CD release. Was this Philips LP released on both sides of the Atlantic?

Best wishes from southern Sweden.

Alistair

Herbert Rehbein

Good to hear from you Alistair and thanks for bringing some activity into the Forum again.
Here we go: Herbert Rehbein issued 2 stereo singles on Philips (remember Philips and Polydor part of the Phonogram group):
1, Beautiful Morning/Late Evening Philips Germany 6003 734 and on the Swiss label International Pick 10-43378 (1978) both own compositions.

2. Beautiful Mountains/La Pastorella Philips Germany 6005 109 (1981) not own compositions, but what a sound. So this was issued after his death.

Both listed as Herbert Rehbein & His Orchestra.

An LP was issued in 1980 titled "Beautiful Morning" as Herbert Rehbein and His Music. Philips 6435062. This LP contains Beautiful Morning/Late Evening by HR & His Orchestra, whereas the remaining 10 tracks are performed by Italian studio musicians.

You can find the CD as Beautiful Morning International Pick 400-210.

So much for now. Kind regards. Nils Folke Persson.

Thanks, Nils-Folke, for a very comprehensive reply. It is good to know that the LP is only partly Herbert Rehbein.

I take it that the singles were of the 45 rpm kind (not 33 rpm)? I ask in order to know whether it is worth my while trying to find them, as I don't have a turntable with 45 rpm!

Best wishes from a still very snowy Sweden.
